FACULTY
Daisy Bate graduated with her Master of Music degree in Cello Performance from Indiana University and received her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of California, Irvine. She has taught at music festivals including the Lake Sequoia Music Camp and the Brevard Music Festival. She has also served as principal cellist with the South Orange County Chamber Orchestra, the UC Irvine Symphony Orchestra, and the Indiana University Concert Orchestra. Mrs. Bate is currently a member of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra and the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra.
Louise Benton has a Tri-State reputation as a premier harp performer and instructor in the region. She heralds hundreds of students that sing her praises spanning a long career of harp instruction.
Meagan Clement has received her Bachelor of Arts in Violin Performance with honors Magna Cum Laude from the University of Memphis. She is an active member of the Suzuki Association of the Americas and has received and registered training for Violin Units 1-3. Presently Meagan also teaches in Jasper, Indiana, at Strings, Inc., and with the Owensboro Symphony Academy. She is conversational in Spanish and has taught at a variety of ministries. While Meagan loves to work with young children using the Suzuki Method, she also enjoys working with middle school, high school, and adults using a more traditional approach.
Joseph Choi, Maestro, is Music Director for the formation of the Western Kentucky Youth Orchestra at RiverBend Academy. He currently is also in his 5th season with the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra as Assistant Conductor and as Music Director and Conductor of the Owensboro Symphony Youth Orchestras. Also in the past Maestro Choi served as Assistant Conductor of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra (2005-2008), Conductor of the Evansville Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (2005-2007), and Conductor of the Evansville Philharmonic Chorus (2005-2008). Maestro Choi has participated in many conducting workshops and competitions. He has placed 1st in the International Conducting Workshop in Macon, Georgia, 2001 Fundacao Oriente Conducting Competition in Portugal, 2008 Pedrotti Conducting Competition, Besancon Conducting Competition, and more. He was fellow conductor in the Conductor’s Institute in Hartford, CT, Domaine Forget in Canada, and has studied conducting with prominent conductors today such as Harold Faberman, Kirk Trevor, Tsung Yeh, Otto Werner-Mueller, and more. Maestro Choi received his undergraduate degree in Music from Southern Adventist University (TN), where he is 2009 Alumnus of the Year, the University of Hartford Hartt School of Music (CT) with his Master of Music in Orchestral Conducting, and studied Doctor of Music Arts at the University of Maryland, where he has studied in Choral Conducting for three years as a full-scholarship doctoral student.
Kaleo Ha'O, is a University of Evansville student, studying with bass professor Lee Veazey. While he is only a college student, he has performed with over six orchestras, been the principal bassist for five of them and studied with some of the best bassists in the modern world, including Francois Rabbath, Edgar Meyer, and Lawrence Hurst. Ha’o started playing the bass in the seventh grade and today also composes music, conducts orchestras, directs theatre performances, and judges at Solo & Ensemble events. Stephen Horning, as the son of two accomplished musicians, has been involved in music since early childhood. He has participated in many plays, musicals, and performances, including four years with the University of Evansville’s Children’s Choir. Playing guitar since the age of twelve, Stephen was quickly inspired by rock, blues and jazz musicians and began to merge their styles into his own. In high school he was active in band, playing both guitar and clarinet, and in choir, which led to a performance in New York City’s Carnegie Hall. He was also involved in an independent study program at Henderson County High School, focusing on guitar. These experiences led to his acceptance into the Interlochen Arts Academy Summer Program for rock and jazz. In 2000, Stephen co-founded the rock fusion band Namaste. They are now a successful, regionally touring group based in Evansville and focused on performing/recording original music. Through Namaste, Stephen has had the opportunity to jam with some of the best musicians in the area and beyond, frequently being invited on stage to “sit in” with other groups. Stephen can utilize these experiences to teach electric and acoustic guitar techniques related to rock and blues music.
Mike Lawing Lawing is an accomplished musician and songwriter having served with numerous bands and recorded with MCA/Curb, Ovation, Dot Records, Capitol Records and Liberty Records in Nashville as well as Capitol Records in Los Angeles. He is a graduate of the Music Business Institute of Atlanta, Georgia, a graduate of the International Bluegrass Music Association’s “Leadership Bluegrass” program and a member of the American Federation of Musicians. He has served as a musician in the areas of fiddle, vocals, mandolin and rhythm guitar as well as served in management roles and acted as publicist for other artists. Lawing has previously taught at the Owensboro Music Center and The International Bluegrass Music Museum. Lawing presently serves since 2005 as the Museum’s Assistant Director. Lawing will teach beginning and intermediate acoustic and electric guitar, beginning bass guitar, beginning and intermediate fiddle, beginning and intermediate mandolin, beginning clawhammer and 3-finger style banjo, and beginning dulcimer. His lessons encompass many popular genres of music but specialize in old-time, bluegrass, classic country, folk and blues/rock.
Julie Nantz has a BS in Psychology from Murray State University and graduate Magna Cum Laude. She has maintained a private piano studio for 25 years, was a volunteer piano instructor for the West Home for Girls, and has experience teaching piano to children with ADHD, OCD, and learning disabilities.
Jessica Treberg is a Tri-State native and a graduate of the University of Evansville where she majored in vocal music education. She is classically trained in voice and piano. She has experience with directing children’s and youth choirs for five years. Her musical theatre experience extends from performing in four musicals and three operas to playing the piano in the pit for four musicals. She has also performed with a Chamber Music Festival for three weeks in England during the summer of 2007. She has been providing private studio piano and voice lessons since 2003.
Gretchen Otness comes to Henderson from her home state of Minnesota. Since moving to Evansville to attend the University of Evansville she has received her Bachelor of Music in Music Performance degree with a concentration in voice, and is finishing her K-12 Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree. Gretchen is classically trained and has 15 years of experience in classical, musical theatre, traditional and contemporary Christian and pop styles of singing. She is also privileged to be the Minister of Music at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, German Township. Gretchen’s approach to teaching is unique and individualized to each student. She works to improve their vocal skills and abilities to meet their personal goals.

WESTERN KENTUCKY YOUTH ORCHESTRA (ENSEMBLE-GROUP) (VIOLIN, VIOLAS, CELLO, DOUBLE BASS ONLY - WIND & PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS WILL BE ADDED AT A LATER DATE TBA) Please keep us informed of your interest if you play any wind or percussion instruments for inclusion after strings section is under development. AUDITION REQUIRED TO JOIN -- Audition Date To Be Set directly with Maestro Joseph Choi Description: Previous music instruction is recommended. Ideally for those who have finished at least SUZUKI Book 1. Students will be able to learn to play together in an ensemble and may be elegible to perform with the Owensboro Symphony Youth Orchestra until enough students achieve abilities to form the Western Kentucky Youth Orchestra. Students will learn to sight-read better, perform with accurate rhythm, and be more familiar with both classical, folk and show tunes. WKYO will be lead by Maestro Joseph Choi, currently assistant conductor of Owensboro Symphony and also the Music Director & Conductor of Owensboro Symphony Youth Orchestras. Experience will expand to a basic repertoire of common intermediate-level tunes by learning to use low first position, mastery of bowing down on the beat and corrective slurring, artistic slurring, understanding basic music theory, and learning double-stop backup combinations. Students will be able to learn to play with good tone, and sounding great like a pro in a year. Private lessons will assist and be able to perform other difficult pieces. Lessons will cover basic violin technique and musicality. Voice (Private– Ongoing throughout the year.) Description: Private instruction offered in traditional voice training. To best facilitate music training, repertoire will include classical, musical theatre, popular, and sacred music. In order to teach proper vocal musicianship, the student will focus on breathing, pitch recognition, phrasing, diction, music theory, anatomically related issues (i.e. soft palette placement, vocal health, posture, etc.), and other musical concepts. Beginning & Intermediate Acoustic Guitar (Private – Ongoing throughout the year.) Description: For a complete beginner or someone who has had some lessons and got discouraged because it was too difficult. This class shows you the easiest possible way of playing guitar, with no pointless exercises or inane type tunes…just good music that the learner will enjoy. Lessons include tuning, moveable chord shapes, cool strumming patterns and much, much more. Beginning and Intermediate Electric Guitar (Private – Ongoing throughout the year.) Description: For those students who have never played a musical instrument or read music, the beginning electric player class covers riffs, power chords, chords & strumming, and scales. Proper hand position and technique will be taught. This class starts the student on the road to becoming a blues/rock player by learning how to play electric guitar. Contents of class Include Holding the Guitar, Tuning, Using the Pick, Proper Left and Right Hand Position, Strumming, Power Chords, Barre Chords and Scales. This class for the advanced beginner to intermediate player teaches more advanced rhythm, scales (Minor Pentatonic) up and down the neck, how to use the scales to create licks, then join these licks together to create solos. Proper hand position and music theory technique are taught. Beginning Electric Bass Guitar (Private – Ongoing throughout the year.) Description: First lessons in Bass is intended to introduce beginning student to the fundamental concepts of playing the electric bass. The material covered makes use of the "3-finger" left hand position commonly found in double bass technique. The emphasis on left hand technique allows the student to develop a consistent fingering approach to the fingerboard, reduces unnecessary strain on the left hand, and makes the bass more accessible to younger students or students with small hands. Beginning Banjo (Private – Ongoing throughout the year.) Description: If you've never played banjo before and haven’t had any previous music experience, this is the place to start! Learn the basics of Scruggs-style three-finger bluegrass banjo picking. Develop your ear as you learn to play. Beginning and Intermediate Fiddle (Private – Ongoing throughout the year.) Description: For those who have never played fiddle or had any previous music instruction, the beginner lessons include tuning, holding the fiddle and bow properly, and learning complete tunes. Learn such songs as Cripple Creek, Cotton-Eyed Joe, Sally Goodwin, Old Joe Clark, Boil Them Cabbage, Amazing Grace. Once the beginner advances, they will use the basics to learn to play easy arrangements of familiar songs that are great for jam sessions. Experience will expand to a basic repertoire of common intermediate-level tunes by learning to use low first position, mastery of bowing down on the beat and corrective slurring, artistic slurring, understanding basic music theory, and learning double-stop backup combinations. Beginning Mandolin -(Private– Ongoing throughout the year.) Description: This class will start you with everything you need to learn how to play and begin to master the mandolin. Students will learn the basics of playing mandolin including how to hold the instrument, chords, scales, and performing songs. Beginning Dulcimer (Private – Ongoing throughout the year.) Description: Classroom music involves systematically layered the lessons to guide the student through familiar songs while teaching skills and musical concepts. This not only enables the student to enjoy the lap dulcimer, but also enhances total music understanding and participation. Additional hints and exercises are presented.
